Compact sets openings for fall salmon fisheries

August 6, 2015

The Columbia River Compact met July 29 to set openings for late summer and fall salmon fisheries.

The non-Indian mainstem early fall salmon fishery will have several 9-hour openings in August. The openings start at 9 p.m. on August 9,11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25 and 27.

The select areas--off channel fisheries--also had openings. The compact set 36 nights for Deep River starting August 17 and 46 nights each for Blind Slough and Young's Bay.

Fishery managers have predicted a strong return of 539,600 adult coho, which includes 377,300 early stock and 162,300 late stock. The forecast is 117 percent of the 2005-2014 average of 459,800 fish. Bonneville Dam passage is expected to total 190,500 adult coho, which represents 65 percent of the total ocean abundance of Columbia River coho destined for areas upstream of Bonneville Dam.

The compact also set recreational fall salmon fisheries.

The Buoy 10 fishery began on August 1 with a two fish/one chinook daily bag limit through September 7 (Labor Day). Chinook retention is scheduled to be closed September 8–30. A mark-selective fishery may be considered in-season during all or part of the non-retention period.

Beginning October 1, chinook retention will reopen with a two fish/two chinook daily bag limit.
