Local volunteers for RIF, or Reading is Fundamental, set up shop at the United Church of Christ across from J.A. Wendt on Monday. RIF is a program that has been putting new and free books into the hands of children for several decades in an effort to fight illiteracy.

Most of Lisa Sauer's first grade students had already picked out their books by 2:45 p.m. but one or two browsed a little longer, wanting to make sure they made the right decision. Other students showed their books to the older volunteers, who then took time to read to them.
