Happy Mother's Day to one and all

Skamokawa News

WONDERFUL WEEKEND--We certainly had a gorgeous weekend with lots of sunshine and warmth, which was perfect to bring in another new month, so I hope you had a wonderful May Day on Sunday. Hopefully you got a nice flower surprise in there as well! As I begin this, it's a great day as the work week begins, but some showers are in the forecast for mid-week. The weekend looks to be nice again, so it'll be another great opportunity to either travel and enjoy the beach areas, or if you're like me, finish up some yardwork, which is really impossible as the weeds did not get the "do not grow" order it seems!

BELATED WISHES--I forgot to say "Happy May Day" in my column last week, as Sunday was that special day. With so much going on, I totally spaced out this holiday. Back in the day, we did a dance around the May Pole and surprised our neighbors with some flowers on their door steps; it was great fun! This year, it was working in the yard all day and then enjoying a BBQ later that evening with John and Mary Gustafson; it was a totally enjoyable day.

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 5-11 are Lori Parke, Tami Bosch, Rosalie Webb, Ashleigh Montgomery, Stan Thacker, Pat Thacker, Evan Quigley, Nick Deal, Stephanie Moonen, Rosie DeBriae, Breanna Cothren, Katherine Parker, Troy Gorley, Kay Cochran, Sawyer Peek, Denise Peek, Beau Silflow, Ashlenn Coleman, Ryan Lorenzo, Erval Cooper, Lizabeth Whitney, Angela Corbin, Mercedes Pedersen and Ashley Jorgensen. Happy Birthday one and all!

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Mark Whitaker and wife, Shannon, Gary and Sandie York, John and Sharon Buennagel, Lonney and Jan Kubacki, Mr. and Mrs. Monte Robinson and belated wishes to Gabriel and Annie Pedersen who celebrated their big day last Tuesday. Hope all your special days are just wonderful!

TODAY--It's Thursday, May 5 and this means it's Cinco De Mayo day, so here's to a fun day and evening for those who celebrate this day. Check your local eateries for special meals today.

FRIDAY MOVIE--There's another great movie coming up for young and old alike, as the animated characters in this fantasy/action movie are threatened by global warming and set out to try to find a safe haven in a new land. The free movie is at the Cathlamet Community Center and all Friday night movies begin at 7 p.m. Again, you can order pizza to be delivered right to the center so you can enjoy it and the movie together. Call Sharon's Pizza at 795-3311 to get it delivered at approx. 6:45 p.m. Remember, all children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

SATURDAY FLEA MARKET--It's time for the monthly Flea Market at the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds, so head to the Youth Building and find that treasure you've been looking for! There are folks there with used things and new things, so check it out from 9 to 3 this Saturday, May 7!

TAKE PHOTOS--Don't forget, this Saturday is also the day to head out with your camera and take a photo of something/someone that would make a great photo about what's happening in "A Day in the Life" of Wahkiakum County, as well as Naselle. You just need to get those photos taken that day and then get them turned into the Eagle by May 13. There are cash prizes for the winners in each of the three divisions. Check out the past Eagles for all the info, or on line, or contact The Eagle office in town for further information.

MOTHER'S DAY--Sunday is supposed to be nice so it will be a great day to treat Mom out to a special meal, and trust me, anytime a Mom doesn't have to cook, it's special. Then you can head over to the Skamokawa Gardens Nursery and let her pick out her own beautiful flower basket or potted plant. It's that time of year when everyone is dressing up their yards, so this is a great time to impress Mom and your neighbors!

DUCK INN--Speaking of Mother's Day, the Duck Inn will have a special Salisbury Steak dinner with dessert on that day, and all the Moms will go home with a flower as well. They will begin serving at 11 a.m.

PROUD MOM--Martie Vavoudis is a proud Mom, so it's no wonder she's letting folks know about her daughter's CD, "Somewhere in Time" by Jillian Raye, so you might want to buy a copy of that and give the gift of music to your Mom this Mother's Day.

FOLLOWING SATURDAY--On May 14, it will be time to take part in the annual 4-H Great White Tail Run around the Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge. There are various lengths of runs, so pick out what's best for you and see if you can't win yourself a prize. Registration takes place at Skamokawa Vista Park by 8:30 a.m., that morning. Have fun!

KAYAKING WEATHER--With all this great weather, it's a great time to hit the waterways, so contact Columbia River Kayaking by calling 360-747-1044 and see about setting up a tour. Or you could drop by as their office is located at the Skamokawa Landing building on Steamboat Slough and check out their gear for sale, which includes new Nigel Dennis kayaks as well as many other great things.

COMING SOON--The Puget Island Farmers Market will be coming soon to the Stockhouse Farm on West Birnie Slough Road so be watching for that. If the calendar is correct, it will begin May 27.

SYMPATHIES--Every time we pick up the paper we seem to see more people we know that have passed away, and sadly, this week was no exception. We send our sympathies to the families of Tom Deufel, Richard (Dick) Mathers, Dawn Jungers, Jackie Vog and Bob Kerstetter who have all just recently died.

BACK HOME--Frank and Carolyn Pedersen stopped by to see Ralph and Peggy Pedersen recently after they had returned from their two week trip to Europe. It seems their trip came with a little added excitement when they took a train going in the wrong direction, missed their ship and had their passports go missing! In spite of all that, they had a great time and it seems that as long as you have money, you can get things fixed in no time! A little FYI though, our money isn't worth a "whoop" over there right now, so if you're going, you'll need more on hand than you might think!

ACTORS WANTED--Have you ever been "Shanghied in Astoria" or at least seen the show put on at the Astor Street Opry Company at 129 West Bond Street in Uniontown/Astoria? Well, if you've seen it, you'll know how much fun it is, so why not strut your stuff and sign on to be one of the actors in it? They always need a hero, a villian, some sturdy women and others, so if the acting bug has ever bitten you, well, here's a chance to do some performing! Just show up at the ASOC Playhouse on Saturday, May 21 from noon to 2 for all those that are new to the show, and if you're a seasoned veteran, show up on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., as they get ready to put on the 32nd annual showing of "Shanghied in Astoria." It's great fun and the first show is in July, so mark that down on your calendars today!
