Luke Brown connected but the Toledo second baseman threw him out at first.

According to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association website, this is the first time since 2006 that the Wahkiakum Mules baseball team has advanced to the state tournament, which begins this weekend.

The Mules clinched their berth to the state tournament on Friday with a win against Napavine, 4--3.

Pitcher Zach Brown got the win, coming in the third inning to replace James Anderson. Z. Brown pitched six innings, allowed three hits and no runs. He struck out eight and walked one. In the first two innings Anderson allowed four hits and three earned runs. He struck out two and walked three.

On offense, Joey Moore, Luke Brown, Terris Record and Hank Ferguson drove in one run each.

"Casey Wilson had an outstanding performance in the outfield," Coach Marc Niemeyer said. "Zach Brown dominated on the bump and Hank Ferguson won the game on a walk off double."

On Saturday, the team traveled to Mossyrock and beat Toledo 5--3 to take third place in the district tournament.

The Mules scored all their runs in the first inning. Z. Brown, Anderson, Ferguson and Mace drove in one run apiece. Terris Record pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He struck out nine and walked one.

"We executed our game plan," Niemeyer said, "and Terris Record was on fire on the hill. Great defense all the way around."

The team travels to W.F. West High School in Chehalis on Saturday in what they hope will be a double header, first facing a 9--1 league, 13--6 overall team from LaConner at 1 p.m.

The loser goes home, and the winner will play either St. George's or Pe Ell/Willapa Valley in a loser out game.
