The Lady Mules celebrate a point in district tournament action. They compete in the state Class 2B volleyball tournament starting Friday.

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules volleyball team finished the district tournament in sixth place and will face the Kalama Chinooks in the first round of the 2B State Volleyball tournament at 1:30 p.m. in Yakima on Friday.

Last Saturday, the last day of the district tournament, the Lady Mules were one of four teams vying for third through sixth place, which would determine who they would meet first at the state tournament.

In the first round of the day, the Lady Mules lost to Toutle Lake in three sets, 13-25, 20-25, and 21-25.

"We didn't play terribly," Coach Kayli Hurley said. "In fact, we did some good things overall. However, we struggled to put all the pieces together in a full set."

Makenzie Anderson led the team with nine kills. Ellie Leitz had seven kills and Macie Elliott added six more. Peyton Souvenir had 27 assists, and Savannah Burdick served 100 percent and passed with a 2.00 average out of a possible 3.00.

The loss sent them to a coin toss with the team that lost to Mossyrock earlier that morning, Life Christian. The Lady Mules lost the coin toss and took sixth place.

"We're heading into state in good spirits," Hurley said. "Kalama is definitely a tough first round draw, but we are the type of team that tries to control what we can. In this case, the only thing we can control is our attitude and effort. We will see what happens."

"I just know that I have an awesome group of kids to get where they are now," Hurley continued. "They're also working hard at goal setting going into the tournament to get our focus where it needs to be."
