Lady Mules, Chinooks play for district title

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team will face Kalama in the District 4 Championship game on Saturday after rolling through three teams this week in district play.

The Kalama Chinooks are ranked third in the WIAA RPI and have lost twice this season to the second place Lady Mules. The team will likely be looking for vengeance.

The Lady Mules began district with a win last Wednesday against Pe Ell at home 72-17. The game was initially scheduled for Monday, but was postponed twice due to snow.

Peyton Souvenir had a triple double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, seven steals, and three blocks. Savannah Burdick hit four treys and finished the game with 20 points. Maddy Mace had eight points. Macie Elliott and Charlie Ashe contributed six points apiece. Mckensi Fluckiger scored five points. Sydney Hansen and Jansi Merz added two points each.

On Saturday, the Lady Mules faced the fourth place Pacific league team, North Beach, and won 77-48.


Souvenir had another triple double with 32 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists. Elliott scored 16 points and had seven rebounds. Burdick had 10 points. Ellie Leitz added five points. Paige Mace scored four. Fluckiger, M. Mace, and Hansen scored three points each. Ashe added one point.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules traveled to Tumwater to face the first place Pacific league team, Ilwaco. Ilwaco is ranked fifth in the state by the WIAA RPI. The Lady Mules won 59-50.

"It definitely wasn't our best offensive night," Coach Rob Garrett said, "but our defense kept us in the game as we were able to cause Ilwaco to turn the ball over 35 times. Then eventually down the stretch, we hit some pretty big shots. Peyton (Souvenir) and Savannah (Burdick) both hit big threes late in the game.


Souvenir led the team with a double double. She had 22 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. Burdick and Elliott added 15 points apiece. M. Mace scored three points. Ashe and Hansen finished the game with two points each.
