Sunny Monday is great for writer's dogs

Down River Dispatches

February 16, 2017

I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed that beautiful day of sunshine on Monday. My dogs were in heaven as we walked for about two hours in the woods and of course had to stop a few times so they could take a dip in all three creeks. Mice are easier to catch after the water goes down in the flooded fields, so they enjoyed quite a few snacks as well.

Hopefully we will see more of that kind of weather soon. Even though I love the rain, I’m not so partial to the five inches of silt that gets deposited on my driveway, or the mess it makes.

News from Naselle:

Westend news:

The Westend Food Pantry is open on Thursdays 1-5 p.m. and is located in Johnson Park (old Rosburg School). They have become an essential part of our community by being there for many of our local families and individuals. This has been a pretty harsh winter for quite a few folks, and having the extras that are provided by the food pantry has made things a little easier for them.

If you would like to help them out with donations, they are always welcome. Canned goods, including meats, veggies and fruit; dry goods such as cereals, pasta, mac and cheese, etc .; laundry soaps, dish soaps, personal hygiene items, and even pet food will help. You can also donate cash to be used for specialty items needed.

Bring your donations to the food pantry on Thursday or drop them in the drop box next to their door during the week, when the building is open. For more information you can contact Shonda Ware or Suzie Whalen.

Check out the Grays River Cafe for some great food and good service. Their new hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. I realize these are short hours but without the support of our community during the slow times of the year, it doesn’t really pay to be open. Hopefully, soon their hours will be increased again. There are some good things coming in their future. Stay tuned.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week in the Rosburg Hall and enjoys a good home cooked meal that has been prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Thursdays, a senior meal is also served in the Rosburg Hall and is sponsored by CAP. Lunch is served at noon for both venues.

Happy Birthday to the following celebrants this coming week: Wayne Erickson, Carol Ross, Kayse Rogers, Junea Brannon, Paul Footh, Charlie Gross, Nate Engelson, Deanna Wilson, Audrey Ullakko, Renee Pitts and Rhonda Warra. Wishing each of you a perfect day.

Happy Anniversary to John and Frieda Footh and to Jon and Norilyn Pakenen. Here’s to many more celebrations together.
