Last summer a group of volunteers set off for a tremendous adventure. Their goal was to offer free summer lunches after summer school. During their 26 days of cooking and serving lunches, they encountered wonderful experiences: Sheriff Howie came to visit during lunch, mystery guests surprised everyone, treats were given, and even Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance. By the time their adventure ended, they had served 567 meals over the summer.

The team of volunteers for Wahkiakum Summer Lunches announces that they will once again serve a free lunch to anyone age 18 and under. Meals will be Monday through Thursday, July 5 through August 16 at noon in the multipurpose room at J.A. Wendt Elementary.

Last year the program was implemented using the USDA program called “Summer Food Rocks.” The team has decided they will not be using it again this year. They are still working with the Wahkiakum County Health Department to ensure that lunches are being cooked and served safely. They are also working with the Wahkiakum School District to provide a safe, familiar environment for the kids to enjoy their lunches.

Since they will not be receiving federal reimbursement for the meals, they are asking that the community help them provide what is needed. They would be appreciative of any donations.
