Basketball camp, lasagna dinner ahead

Down River Dispatches

September 21, 2017

Tornados? Oh my goodness, what a weather pattern we had this past week. The weather has gone crazy all over. I was sitting on the couch on Monday with thunder and lightning all around us, hail falling and three 100+ pound dogs in my lap. They are terrified of the noise. In the night during thunder showers, it’s all pile on the bed: Mom will save us. Bet that paints quite a picture.

Much needed rain was welcome here and definitely in the fire zones of the state. I would like to give a huge thank you to all the firefighters out there. And another thank you to all those businesses in the affected areas that fed the firefighters and gave them some respite from a tough job.

I drove to Oregon last Wednesday, for a “family fix” and spent some time with all of them. The smoke in the Gorge was still really bad and even worse in central Oregon. It was good to come home to our little corner of the world.

Enrollment will be at the door only. Messaging your interest and expected number of players attending would be much appreciated and an aid to planning. Westend news:

This is the weekend for a delicious meal that will benefit the memory of a wonderful lady, Pat Potter. The West End Food Pantry’s annual Lasagna Dinner will be held in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on Saturday, 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. There will also be a drawing for a door prize.

Shonda Ware and her family will dish up a delicious lasagna and a gluten free eggplant variety is also available, a yummy salad, garlic bread, and dessert.

In memory of his mother, Pat Potter, this year’s dinner proceeds will be donated to her son, Randy. From now on, these annual dinners will benefit a needy family in our community.

Tickets can be purchased from the Food Pantry board members or you can pick them up on Thursdays 1-5 p.m. at the pantry at Johnson Park. Tickets will be available at the door. For more information please call Shonda Ware at 465-2722. Donations of non-perishable food is also appreciated.

Happy Birthday to Jada Hunsinger, Patrick Smith, Jenelle Varila, Nicole Steenerson, Eli Gardner, Darla Ullakko, Dawn Footh and Abbey Zimmerman. Here’s to a perfect day.

Happy Anniversary to Philip and Mindy Penttila. Wishing you many more celebrations.

A memorial service will be held for one of my favorite neighbors, Randy Collver on October 28 at the Valley Bible Church located at 4723 SR 4 in Rosburg, 1-4 p.m. There will be refreshments provided, and if you wish, you may bring a side dish, a salad or dessert. Since many will be traveling to attend, his lovely wife, Ramona would like to be contacted if you plan to attend so she will have an estimated count for the memorial. Her number is 360-465-2597.

Last Sunday, my sister Diane and I traveled to Portland to attend the Cirque du Soleil show “Kurious.” What an incredible performance! If you haven’t seen one of their shows, you are really missing out on some amazing talents. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the trip home in the rain.

The weather man says we are in for a nice weekend coming up. Looks like mowing the lawn is in order after I pick my niece up from the airport on Saturday for a 10 day stay. I love having family here.
