Mule quarterback Lucas Brown breaks up the middle for the winning points in the Mules' 21-14 homecoming win over Raymond last Friday.

The Wahkiakum Mules celebrated their homecoming football game with a 21-14 win last Friday over the visiting Raymond Seagulls.

The Mules controlled play, but the Gulls kept it close with two big scoring plays.

Freshman Chance Cothren put the Mules on the scoreboard at 5:49 of the first quarter with a one-yard plunge. Lucas Brown kicked the conversion--he was three for three for the night--for a 7-0 Mule lead.

With 3:18 left in the second quarter, Brown scored on a two-yard drive, and the Mules led 14-0.

The Gulls struck back with McCartney Madden scoring on a 57-yard run 2:27 before halftime; Reese Garcia kicked the conversion to create a 14-7 halftime score.

Raymond controlled play in the third quarter, but the Mule defense kept the Gulls out of the endzone.

The Mules put together the winning drive in the fourth quarter with Brown scoring on a 21-yard run at 4:15. The conversion gave the Mules a 21-7 lead.

Raymond closed the gap to 21-14, with Patrick Edwards scoring on a 56-yard run with 2:26 left in the game; Garcia kicked the conversion.

"With the exception of two big plays, our defense played pretty well," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen.

The Gulls gained 217 yards rushing, 113 on the two touchdown runs. They completed one pass for nine yards.

The Mules gained 180 yards on the ground and 118 in the air.
