Logan LaBerge scrambled for the ball in the Wahkiakum Mules' overtime loss to Willapa Valley, 57-55. LaBerge, a freshman, sank two free throws to tie the Vikings, 52-52, and send the game into overtime.

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team began their season with two very different losses this week.

On Monday at home, they lost to Willapa Valley in overtime, 57-55, after coming back from a 13 point deficit at the end of the third quarter.

The Brown brothers combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter, and freshmen Logan LaBerge and Brody Carlson were clutch in the final minutes of regulation play. Carlson hit a three pointer to bring the Mules within two and LaBerge scored two from the free throw line to tie up the game, and take them into overtime.

Senior Zach Brown, who missed last season due to an injury, scored 24 points to lead the Mules. Luke Brown added 16. KC Beery had six points, Carlson scored four, LaBerge added three, and Evan Quigley finished the game with two.

Senior Zach Brown, who missed his junior year of basketball due to an injury, returned to lead the team with 24 points to start the season.

"I thought the boys played really well at both ends of the floor at times," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "We've just got to clean up our rebounding. We gave up about 21 offensive rebounds for the game, which was about 15 too many. Clean up the turnovers and I think we would have come out on top. It was a good start and a great experience for some young kids that are going to definitely grow and get better throughout the season. I was really proud of their effort."

"It was nice to have Zach (Brown) back with 24 points and Luke (Brown) with 16," Souvenir added. "It's nice to have those two on the court playing together."
