Lady Mules win four straight games

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team proved to be hard to beat at home after sweeping four teams in competition this week.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules clobbered Winlock 71-9.

"I thought the girls worked really hard tonight from beginning to end," Coach Rob Garrett said. "We did a good job of working on our position on defense and anticipating. It was nice to see everyone just go out and enjoy the game."

Macie Elliott led scorers with 21 points and eight steals. Paige Mace had 10 points. Mckensi Fluckiger had nine points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals. Ellie Leitz added nine points and six rebounds. Maddy Mace scored seven points. Jansi Merz had six, Alex Watkins score four, Charlie Ashe added three, and Nai'a Freeman finished the game with two points.

Overall, the Lady Mules stole the ball 36 times.

On Friday, the Mules beat Toledo 60-46, and Elliott topped a personal record, scoring 34 points.

"I was really happy with the girls defensive effort," Garrett said. "I thought we crashed the boards better than we have so far this year. Offensively, we struggled, and Macie took over. She had a phenomenal all around game."

Elliott also had seven rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Ashe had seven points, M. Mace scored five, Merz and Watkins had four apiece, Leitz and P. Mace had three. Leitz also had seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Lady Mules had 37 rebounds overall.

On Saturday, the Lady Mules hosted Friday Harbor and won easily 66-12.

"Awesome game," Garrett said. "Best defense we have played in a long time. This group is already figuring out how to play our defense which could be scary down the road. The girls are having a blast and working extremely hard. It was a balanced scoring attack from across the board.

Freshman Jansi Merz, 5'11", proved she could post up. Merz scored four points and pulled down eight boards in the Lady Mules 62-9 win against the Ducks on Tuesday night.

P. Mace led scorers with 14 points. Elliott and Ashe had 10 each. Leitz scored nine. Watkins had seven points and seven rebounds. M. Mace had seven points. Fluckiger had five points. Merz had four points and seven rebounds.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules stomped Toutle Lake, 62-9. They held the Ducks to seven points for much of the game.

Almost everyone on the team contributed to the final score. Leitz had a big game at post, scoring 15 points. She also had 11 rebounds. P. Mace had 13 points. Elliott had 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. M. Mace scored seven points. Merz and Kimberlee Watkins added four points each. Ashe had three points and four assists. Fluckiger, Destiny Curl, and Freeman finished the game with two points apiece.

The Lady Mules travel to Kalama on Friday; they go to Mossyrock on Monday, and they head to eastern Washington to play in the Colton Tournament on Dec. 20 and 21.
