This scene was much like the fellow who tries to pick up his hat but kicks it instead. The scramble for the ball went on for some time but it ended well. The Mules beat Winlock in overtime 73-66.

A terrific overtime win against Winlock on Jan. 24 offset two tough losses for the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team last week.

In front of a home crowd last Wednesday, the Mules avenged an earlier 75-52 loss to Winlock by beating the Cardinals 73-66 in overtime.

The Mules were ahead by three in the fourth quarter when a Cardinal landed a last second shot from the corner to take the game into overtime.

Wahkiakum had several opportunities to solidify their lead in the fourth quarter with trips to the free throw line, but they weren't able to capitalize, hitting four of 10.

Momentum shifted in the Mules favor during overtime and they outscored the Cardinals 11-4 to win the game.

Luke Brown led the Mules with 22 points. K.C. Beery and Quentin Nelson added 15 points apiece. Logan LaBerge scored 11, and Brody Carlson finished the game with 10 points, hitting three from outside the arc.

"We moved the ball and played as a team from start to finish," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "I thought we responded really well when we fell behind by six late in the third. We also got after it on the defensive boards, which limited their second chance points and points in the paint."

On Friday, the Mules hosted the number one team in the league, Toledo, and lost 55-28.

Freshmen LaBerge and Carlson scored nine points each to lead the team. L. Brown and Nelson had four points apiece. Beery added two more.

The Mules faced Kalama at home on Wednesday. The score was not available by press time.

Their final game of the regular season is tomorrow (Friday) at home against Mossyrock. District play begins on Monday.

The Mules are currently in eighth place but if they win both games this week, they have a chance to move into seventh, according to Coach Souvenir. Check the Wahkiakum County Eagle website or the Wahkiakum Eagle Sports Report on Facebook for updates on district games.
