The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team started district play with a win this weekend and looked for an opportunity to avenge their early season loss to the WIAA number one ranked 2B team, Ilwaco, on Wednesday in the semifinals.
In Rochester on Saturday, the Lady Mules beat the Pacific 2B league number three team, the Ocosta Wildcats, 56-32.
Freshman Paige Mace led the team with 23 points, four assists, and five steals. Ellie Leitz had 13 points and eight rebounds. Macie Elliott scored seven points and had six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Jansi Merz contributed six points and six rebounds. Destiny McGowan, Maddy Mace, and Megan Leitz scored two points apiece. Charlie Ashe added one from the free throw line.
Yesterday (Wednesday), the Lady Mules faced Ilwaco in the district semifinals at Kelso High School. The Fishermen beat Wahkiakum 58-46 earlier this season and currently hold the highest ranking in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's RPI (ratings percentage index). The Lady Mules are in fourth place.
