If I wanted a lesson in perseverance and courage, I wouldn't have to look any farther than the Wahkiakum Mules softball team.

Despite six more losses this week and a 0-12 record, these athletes keep showing up for practices, they keep showing up for games. They may be young but they are already learning one of life's harder lessons. I, for one, am impressed and hopeful about the coming years for Wahkiakum softball.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules lost two in Kalama, 18-8 and 15-0.

"Hitting is going well and fielding is improving," Coach Stephanie Green said. "The umpire even said it was like night into day when the girls started first innings. Our pitchers are improving and throwing the ball down the lane. It's a hard place to play and to keep working at it."

"Arrow Rose stepped into the catching position and did a great job," Green continued. "The girls are a delight and are really doing a great job. They are struggling with keeping their heads up and positive at times but have come miles from where they started."

On Friday, they traveled to Kalama and lost 14-4 and 23-13.

"The girls kept fighting and kept pushing," Coach Green said.

On Monday, the team hosted Toledo and lost 19-2 and 21-5.

"The girls are a little flustered with losing but are really doing well," Green said. "They have grown and improved in so many ways. They are hitting, turning plays, and stealing. They have come miles and miles from where they began."

"I'm so proud of the steps the girls take every day," Green added.

Green said she continues to focus on teaching skills. There is talk about attending a softball camp this summer, but funds are low.

I hope you will consider stopping by their final doubleheader of the season on Friday to cheer on these brave athletes. They host Toutle Lake and their first game starts at 3 p.m.
