WHS vocational arts students hard at work

Here's a quick look at some of the activities that our CTE and FFA programs have participated in over the month of March:

-- District 8 FFA district competition. Naia Freeman placed second in extemporaneous speaking. Jenna Mellis place third in the creed. Jansi Merz, M.J. Neves, Kaden Anderson, and Nalani Schultz placed second in the greenhand competition.

-- Natural Resources class. Students and WDFW employee Steve Collie release juvenile fish into Birnie Creek. Mr. Hurley's Natural Resources class has been raising the fish since fall of 2017 at the Beaver Creek hatchery. They will hold the fish here for the next 4-6 weeks until the fish get acquainted to Birnie Creek.

-- Practice for the Employability FFA contest. The contest consisted of a cover letter, resume, application, and interview. Naia Freeman and Robert Will competed in the competition and placed in the top 10.

-- Preparation and participation in the JAG interview contest. JAG members practiced for and participated in a job interview contest. Ayesha Ahmed placed bronze in the competition.

-- FFA members participated in tree pruning for community members after school.

-- Stanley Sanitation Service dumpster fixing. Students in Mr. Hurley's second period Ag. Mechanics class are learning hands on skills by fixing up old rusted dumpsters. The containers have rusted badly on the bottom and students are removing them and replacing them with new steel on the bottoms.

April activities included:

-- 2018 State FFA Trap Shoot. 200 shooters participated in this competition. Zach Johnston earned a score of 79, Michael Martin scored 74, Hank Bassi scored 74, Aaron Mahitka scored 70, Bryson Havens scored 53 and Kaleo Silva scored 43.

-- Petting Zoo. FFA students brought animals and pets from their house for kids preschool through 5th grade to see and pet. There were two baby pigs, a baby calf, baby ducks, baby chicks, a baby goat, two lambs, two bunnies, two dogs, and Jansi Merz brought a horse. Each grade came up to the shop and took turns walking around petting each animal. Over 200 kids participated in the zoo.
