The Adna Pirates aren't ranked first in the Associated Press Class 2B football poll for nothing: They're a good team.

The Pirates took it to the Wahkiakum Mules for a 34-0 victory last Friday.

The Mules had returned to the football poll after a few years of program building and went into the game ranked ninth in the AP poll.

Adna scored on a long sweep play on the first play to set the tone of the game.

"That put us in a hole right away," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "We gave them some good field position. Later we snapped the ball over the punter's head.

"Our defense played well over all, but the offense sputtered."

The schools called the game late in the fourth quarter when sophomore Mule linebacker Beau Carlson sustained a severe head injury while attempting to make a tackle. Coaches Hansen and Marc Niemeyer accompanied him to a hospital.

The Pirates gained 213 yards on the ground and 53 in the air for 266 yards of offense. Adna led 6-0 after one quarter, 20-0 at halftime, and notched two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 34-0 score.

The Mules had 72 yards rushing and 34 yards passing for 105 total yards of offense.

Quentin Nelson picked up 37 yards on eight carries; James Anderson had 26 yards on six runs. Lucas Brown completed three of nine passes for 34 yards. Chance Cothren caught two passes for 32 yards; Brown caught the other pass for a two yard gain.

Brown led the defense with 11 tackles; Ashden Niemeyer and Tristan Collupy each had eight; Evan Quigley and Tristan Collupy each had six, and James Anderson four.

The Mules fell to 1-1 for the season. This Friday, they entertain the 2-0 Onalaska Loggers, a hard running option football team.
