The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team won three more games on the road this week to bring their record to 9-0 in league, 18-1 overall. They retain first place in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association statewide ranking for girls’ 2B basketball.

Last Thursday, the Lady Mules beat the Indians 44-24 in Toledo.

“Not our best night shooting,” Coach Rob Garrett said, “but it was nice to see the defense step up especially in the second half. I thought Charlie (Ashe) and Ellie (Leitz) both had a great second half defensively. Macie (Elliott) kickstarted things in the second half with a couple quick baskets and and an assist which is exactly what we needed. Kenny (Fluckiger) also came off the bench and did some really nice things on both ends of the court for us in the second half. Ellie and Kenny’s rebounding was awesome, they really went and attacked the ball.”

Macie Elliott led scoring with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Ellie Leitz had a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Jansi Merz added eight points. Mckensi Fluckiger scored five points and seven rebounds, Kimberlee Watkins had four points, and Emmie Niemela finished the game with one.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Onalaska and won easily, 82-26.

“We shot the ball great!” Coach Garrett said. “We shot 44 percent from the three point line, as a team. Paige (Mace) had a great bounce back game. She shot four for seven from three point range and two for three in twos for 16 total. It was really nice to see her come out and play with so much confidence after a rough last game. Macie also had a great shooting night, going five for nine from three point range and seven for nine at the free throw line for 26 total. I thought Kimberlee rotated extremely well on defense and rebounded really well. Ellie also rebounded well tonight and added 12 points. Jansi took a bit to get going, but once she did, she played very physical and added 11 points.

Three Lady Mules had double doubles for the night. Elliott scored 26 points and pulled down 10 boards, Paige Mace had 16 points and 10 assists, and Leitz added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Merz contributed 11 points and Fluckiger had five. Miya Kerstetter scored three points. Charlie Ashe, Destiny Curl, K. Watkins, and Reigha Niemeyer had two points apiece.

“I thought it was a fun game tonight,” Coach Garrett said. “Adna provided another great atmosphere and their girls worked extremely hard defensively. It was nice to see the girls consistently continue to stretch the lead throughout the game. I was really happy with how my bigs rebounded in the second half and we shared the ball really well with lots of different girls adding in on the scoreboard.”
