Jeff Smith, new manager of Wahkiakum Port District 2, outlined a wide variety of plans and projects when the district board of commissioners met Tuesday.

Smith reported that an upgrade of electric service at County Line Park has finished.

The commission would like to upgrade water service at County Line, but costs are a concern. Smith said design work could cost $18,000-$24,000, and physical work would be another $20,000 or more.

Wahkiakum County, owner of the park property, has budgeted $40,000 for improvements, but $13,000 was spent on the electrical work.

"Let's talk to the board of county commissioners," said port Commissioner Lori Scott.

Smith also asked commissioners to consider raising rates for tent camping at County Line. People have taken up long-term residence, he said, for the rate is low and there are not limits on how long one can camp there.

Smith and port district attorney Tim Hanigan will develop new rates to be considered at the port's May meeting.

Smith outlined other suggestions, including installing permanent restrooms at Svensen Park on Puget Island and adding facilities to encourage day use visits to the park. In other business covered at the Tuesday meeting:

--Graphic artists have nearly completed design for signs for Svensen Park and nearby Coffee Pot Island, he reported.

--The port has been installing security cameras around Skamokawa Vista Park and the nearby port garage, Smith said; staff are also installing lighting to improve security.

--Smith also reported that teepees at Vista Park are having problems with ventilation and mold, and staff are working to have them ready for the camping season.

--Smith recommended the port lease the esppresso stand at Vista Park to a private party or business.
