No need for boredom in this county

To The Eagle:

Recently a new resident to our community posted on Cathlamet News on Facebook. He asked if there was anything to do around here because he was “feeling bored.”

As a newcomer as well (coming up on three years) I would like to offer some suggestions to him and other folks new to the Wahkiakum area.

First, join a church. It’s an immediate community of friends. We have seven churches from a Bible church to the Catholic Church. Find one that fills your spiritual needs. Join a Bible study. Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church has one every Wednesday at 10:00.

Next, join the Sons of Norway. It’s another great group of people who have a long history in the area. You don’t have to be Norwegian to join. Other clubs include the Lions Club and the VFW. Both are very active and serve our community well.

Not a “joiner”? Then be sure to look for opportunities to support their efforts. Volunteer your time and services. The Food Bank is a great place to help. Check with St. James Episcopal and volunteer with their many programs. Help the summer lunch program feeding our at-risk children during the summer.

Check with our Community Center and join in their many, many activities. Volunteer on weekends at the Museum. Offer your services to the Cowlitz/Wahkiakum Volunteer Services assisting people who need help with errands, a ride to appointments, light housekeeping and more.

Do you love fishing? Offer to help with the Widows and Warriors Fishing Derby. Join the volunteers of the Fire Departments (there are three), the Search and Rescue team or Sheriff’s volunteers. Socialize at Patty Cakes for coffee, Taco Tuesday at Maria’s and weekends at Mile 38 Brewery. Buy local and attend farmers markets, flea markets, boat shows and events at the Tsuga Art Gallery.

Support the school and attend the games and events. There are other clubs like wood carvers, wooden boat builders and amateur radio operators. The Chamber of Commerce can help connect you to the contact people.

These are just some of the things you can become involved in beyond the annual events like Bald Eagle Days, P.I.G.Y.S sale, the Silver Buckle Rodeo events and the countless car shows. And don’t forget to check out The Eagle every week for more opportunities to get involved in our new home. Welcome to the greatest little town you were lucky enough to find!
