Port District 1 plans new camping spots

The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners met last Thursday to talk about marina business.

Counsel Tim Hanigan gave a quick update on the most recent meeting between Port 1 and Port 2.

“The last meeting went well,” Hanigan said, “there was a discussion of items that the ports might be able to work on together. Hopefully I’ll have a resolution for you to peruse and approve next time.”

The port is planning to build an awning for the new concession stand, KCC Treats, to protect owners and customers in inclement weather. They are also putting in campsites along the northeast side of the marina. The first site is nearly cleared, and a picnic table and fire pit are planned.

“That first spot is hand’s down going to be the best one,” Assistant Port Manager Todd Souvenir said. “Its a good location. It’s pretty nice out there.”

The port is also applying for a grant from the Marine Resources Committee in hopes of building a 40 x 20 viewing deck on the waterfront.

Memorial Day weekend should be busy, with two yacht clubs visiting the marina and the opening day of the Farmers Market on May 24 from 4-7. Three weeks later, on June 14, there will be another Trunk Sale, concurrent with the Farmers Market.

Souvenir informed the commissioners that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s regional director will be at the Courthouse on May 20 at 2 p.m.

“They need to be talked to for sure; they need to feel our pain,” Commissioner Brett Deaton said.

Low fish runs and a lack of a spring salmon season on this part of the river has hit the port hard financially, and has port officers looking for other ways to bring in revenue. Sturgeon season, which opened Monday, will help a little.

“In the past, sturgeon season has been pretty much an in and out fishery, but this year with an extended time frame we have got quite a few reservations,” Souvenir said.

“Some light in the tunnel,” Commissioner Bob Kizziar commented.
