Will staff of Port District No. 2 take over maintenance and operation responsibilities for Wahkiakum County's Fairgrounds Park?

At their monthly meeting Tuesday, commissioners and staff of Port 2 said they are willing to consider the possibility.

"We could take care of it (the park adjacent to the fairgrounds in Skamokawa)," said Commissioner Lee Tischer.

Tischer acknowledged that a similar proposal a few years ago was soundly rejected by supporters of the county fair, who feared they would lose the ability to use the fairgrounds for fundraising activities.

"This wouldn't involve the fairgrounds," Tischer said. "That might change their feelings on the issue."

Commissioner Lori Scott noted that there have been RV campers at Fairgrounds Park.

"Do they charge fees," she asked about the fair association. "We don't want to step on their toes."

Tischer and Manager Jeff Smith said they would explore possible interest by the county or fair association in contracting with Port 2 to manage the park.

In other business, Smith reported that a sinkhole had developed on the drainfield at County Line Park, and he has asked a septic system contractor to investigate. Restrooms are functioning, he said, and the area has been filled and closed off.

Commissioners also passed two resolutions: One established ranges of compensation for assistant office manager, maintenance staff, and part time employees. The second set up policies for overnight and monthly rental of campground facilities.
