According to Webster’s the definition of self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health. Self-care has a medical history that dates to the 50’s. Prior to the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, these patients were usually mentally ill and elderly people who required long-term care and otherwise had little autonomy.

It wasn’t until the rise of the women’s movement and the civil rights movement that self-care became a political act. Women and people of color viewed controlling their health as a corrective to the failures of a white, patriarchal medical system to properly tend to their needs, moving to then become a political stance in a way to establish physical autonomy. More recently, since 2016, self-care has gone ‘mainstream’. There are a lot of reasons why people are moving toward taking back their health, but more importantly, how can you? Whatever way you can give yourself self-care, whether it be a support system, a hairdo, an education or a workout--I hope you make time for it.

Feb. 27 I will teach a mini-cooking class at Helping Hands food bank from 1-2 p.m. We will make homemade bread and delicious soup to warm your bones, so come hungry and be ready to have some fun.

March 3 at 1 p.m., is the second meeting for volunteers and planning for the Outdoor Café at the CC. I’m putting a call out to any stay-at-home parents out there who would be interested in helping for a few hours a week this summer. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a program that supports the kids in our community with healthy summer lunches and fun activities.

March 27, 10-2 p.m., is the Living Well Event at Johnson Park. Wahkiakum Health & Human services and other local partners are working hard to plan an event that will be full of information, giveaways, demonstrations, samples and much more. Mark your calendar and keep an eye out for more information.

March 28 is the Seed Exchange here at the CC. Come rub elbows with some of the friendliest gardeners you will ever meet. Heirloom seeds and great conversation-what could be better?

Friday night is date night, so bring your valentine to a free movie here at the CC and enjoy saving some moo-lah. Starts at 7 p.m., we hope to see you here!

“I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival.” --Audre Lorde.

Be well, Wahkiakum!
