Comets capture 3rd in state tourney

The Naselle Comets celebrate third place at the State 1B tournament in Spokane on Saturday.

The Naselle boys basketball team brought home a third place trophy from the State Class 1B tournament in Spokane last week.

They started the tournament on Thursday with a 57-50 win against Muckleshoot Tribal School in overtime.

Corey Gregory led the team with 24 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Ethan Lindstrom had 16 points and seven rebounds. Warren Wirkkala scored six points. Jimmy Strange added four points. Chase Haataia had three points. Kolby Glenn and Caleb Haataia added two points apiece.

Naselle lost in the semifinals on Friday to the eventual winner of the 1B tournament, Odessa, 62-56.

Lindstrom scored 16 points to lead the team. Glenn had 13 points and five assists. Gregory added another 13 points. Strange had six points. Caleb Haataia scored five points and Wirkkala finished the game with three.

On Saturday, the Comets defeated Lummi Nation 70-41 for third place.

Glenn led the team with 17 points and five assists. Chase Haataia scored 14 points. Gregory had 10 points,12 rebounds, and three steals. Wirkkala added nine points. Strange had six points. Caleb Haataia had five points. Jack Ruch scored four points. Lindstrom added three points and Monte Schell had two points.
