March 26, 2020



Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

March 16 — 10:42 a.m. A Skamokawa resident reported that eight horses belonging to a neighbor were in her field, eating her hay. A deputy spoke with the neighbor who said she had fixed the fence after finding it down and put all the horses away. She found all her horses on her property when she arrived; she said she never observed them off her property. 1:08 p.m. A caller reported that the boat launch at Vista Park was blocked by a neighbor’s wood pile. A deputy tried to make contact with the neighbor, but no one responded at the home. The deputy planned to follow up. 2:48 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that he had received notice from a collection agency that he owed money to a gas and electric company in Michigan, despite the fact he did not live in Michigan. A deputy advised the caller to contact the Federal Trade Commission and attempted to contact the collection company, but there was no answer. 5:02 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver who was possibly texting while heading west on SR 4 on Abe Creek Hill. 5:14 p.m. A caller reported that his ex-girlfiriend was yelling at him while he was at his former home in Rosburg to move some of his things. A deputy and state patrol responded. 6:40 p.m. A caller reported that there were cows on SR 4 west of Skamokawa. A deputy responded and moved the cows back into their pasture. A message was left for a possible owner, who called back later and said he would fix the issue. 7:48 p.m. A caller said that a man had knocked on the door of her east county home and asked for a ride to Longview. When she said no, he asked her to call the sheriff’s department. 9:36 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident said someone was shining a spotlight into their home. 10:56 p.m. A Puget Island resident was worried that a child who had a history of running away might be planning do so again. The caller was advised of resources.


March 17 — 7:42 a.m. A caller reported that his wife had blown a tire on SR 4 in the Nassa Point area and that the vehicle was on a corner, a possible traffic hazard. 11:07 a.m. The owner of an apartment building in Cathlamet said that an individual who had been evicted had returned to the property. He asked for assistance in having him removed. A deputy responded and informed the individual that if he returned, he would be subject to arrest. 2:56 p.m. A caller reported that a semi truck was parked in the parking lot of the Legion Hall in Deep River and that the owner of the truck knew it wasn’t allowed. 6:33 p.m. A caller reported that someone had dumped garbage along Nelson Creek Road. 9:22 p.m. A Rosedale resident reported hearing an alarm but could not ascertain what it was or where it was coming from. It turned out to be a smoke alarm at a neighboring home. Someone was able to gain access to the residence and turn off the alarm.


March 18 — 12:16 a.m. A caller reported hearing an alarm from a neighboring Rosedale home. It was the same one that had been reported at 9:22 p.m. the previous day. A deputy and someone from the District 4 Fire Department responded, with the help of a neighbor who had a key to the residence. The alarm was reset. 3:28 a.m. A Puget Island resident said that someone was taking mail out of mailboxes. It turned out to be a postal employee delivering mail. 8:23 a.m. A caller reported that a vehicle was being repossessed from a Rosburg home. 9:45 a.m. A 911 call from a Puget Island home was abandoned. Dispatch tried to call back, but there was no response. A deputy was sent to the home for a welfare check. 2:18 p.m. The sheriff’s department received a report of abuse at a Wahkiakum County home from Adult Protective Services. A deputy attempted to make contact but no one was home. 7:55 p.m. A caller reported that a suspicious vehicle, possibly used in drug activity, was headed to the refuge. 10:14 p.m. A caller reported that two suspicious people were walking on Elochoman Valley Road.


March 19 — 10:35 a.m. A caller reported that there were some people making a lot of noise at the end of her driveway in the Skamokawa area. 2:03 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual who had fallen by the city dock. 9:21 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that their drinking water was brown. They were advised that it was due to recent repairs and that it should go away soon. 10:32 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident who had fallen.


March 20 — 7:42 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident who had fallen. The Puget Island Fire Department responded as well to help with lift assist. 12:24 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an ailing Puget Island resident. 3:07 p.m. A caller reported a motor vehicle accident on SR 4 near Cape Horn. A deputy and state patrol responded. 3:26 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Rosedale resident with a heart issue. 4:16 p.m. A caller reported that someone in a vehicle appeared to be harassing a woman walking on Elochoman Valley Road. Deputies responded and discovered that the woman was walking because her gym was closed, and her boyfriend was driving alongside her because he did not want her walking that far. 4:58 p.m. A caller reported that her wallet had been stolen. 5:51 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported that a trailer that she believed might be stolen had been abandoned on her property.

March 21 — 8:19 a.m. A caller reported that a vehicle had been abandoned in a parking lot in the Elochoman Valley. 10:31 a.m. A welfare check was requested for a Cathlamet resident who was behaving strangely. A deputy made contact and then called the mental health department, who said they would send someone to speak with the individual. 8:07 p.m. A caller reported that an unattended brush pile was on fire at Erickson Park. The Cathlamet Fire Department responded and put out the fire. The sheriff’s department was asked to send a deputy to check on it throughout the night.


March 22 — 8:47 a.m. A caller reported that someone was sleeping in the post office lobby. 9:06 a.m. A welfare check was requested for an ailing Skamokawa resident. A deputy responded and requested assistance. The Skamokawa ambulance responded. 9:57 a.m. A caller reported that he could hear yelling from a neighbor’s home in Cathlamet. A deputy responded. An individual in the home said that his dad was hard of hearing and that sometimes he has to raise his voice. The deputy found no signs of distress. 12:16 p.m. A caller reported that someone had broken into his property on Beaver Creek Road and had stolen several items. 5:17 p.m. A Rosburg resident reported that there was ash falling on their property and a smell of hot metal in the air, as well as a lot of black smoke from a nearby fire. A deputy and the Grays River Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.

March 23 — 2:03 a.m. An individual was seen attempting to enter a Cathlamet restaurant. He left the scene on a bicycle.
