The Wahkiakum Lions Club and some other members in the community have joined forces to create Helping Hands, which is now providing delivery services in Wahkiakum County.

"I think we had our first customer today,” volunteer Terri Elfers said. She was taking a turn manning the phone line. For health reasons, she has been sticking close to home, but wanted to do what she could to help the community.

“I have to sit back,” she said. “It’s killing me.”

The service is available to anyone in the county.

To participate, contact Wahkiakum Lions Club Helping Hands, and place an order with Cathlamet Fresh Market or with Fred Meyer or Walmart in Longview.

Volunteers will bring the delivery to your doorstep, then knock on the door or ring the doorbell to alert you, and move back to a safe distance to their vehicle to watch and wave . If no one comes to the door, a call will be made to the home.

Eventually they hope to be able to pick up prescriptions too, so long as it isn’t narcotics, Elfers said.

The group is also looking for healthy volunteers all over the county, who have not been traveling out of the country or been in contact with an ailing person in the past 14 days. So far they have volunteers all over the county, including the Westend, but they are looking for more people to answer the phone or pick up deliveries.
