Motorbikes make poker run for festival

A group of motorbike riders leave the Elochoman Slough Marina Saturday after completing a poker run sponsored by the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce as an event for the pandemic restricted Bald Eagle Days festival. Thirty-three riders participated, and the Chamber plans to add the event to the regular Bald Eagle Days schedule.

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce hosted their first annual Poker Run on Saturday, in lieu of Bald Eagle Days, which were canceled because of the pandemic.

The event raised money for Dollars for Scholars while taking motorcycle riders on a tour of the east side of Wahkiakum County as they picked up playing cards at local businesses and hoped for a hand that would win them a portion of the pot made up of entry fees.

"Even though it was a small event, we're trying to keep the spirit of Bald Eagle Days alive," Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce Director Stephanie Moonen said.

The ride brought business to town, Moonen said, with 33 people taking part, including riders from Astoria and Portland.

"It sounds like everyone stuck around town to eat at Maria's, heading over to the brewery later in the day," she said. "All in all, it was fun."

So much fun, they hope to add the ride to the usual festivities, when Bald Eagle Days return next year.
