KMUN's fall membership drive was a success

November 5, 2020

The audience of radio station KMUN is vast, diverse, committed and generous. This has been confirmed again and again over the years but quite loudly in 2020 thanks to the 407 donors who helped the station raise $58,000 this fall. This number includes 84 new members.

It is the business model of KMUN that at least one -third of the operating budget comes from the community and that translates as memberships. In the 37 years of KMUN, there have been membership drives, with the most recent template of a Spring and Fall drive. The typical drive has guest hosts and partners talking for several minutes per hour about the reasons to support this fine station. But with the studios closed and the program hosts working from home, they needed a new way to get the word out about membership.

KMUN's Membership Director Janet Fryberger and Program & Artistic Director Emily Geddes put together a campaign named “We ask quietly and you give LOUDLY!” with “asks” at the top of each hour and graphics on the website and social media. Donors were directed to the donation page on the KMUN website.

Most donations came in through the website. And “a couple of exciting surprises happened during this drive,” said Fryberger, “we were approaching the final day, just a little short of the goal, when a large gift of several thousand dollars came in from one member and propelled us up and over the goal line! Another surprise bonanza was a substantial gift of stock. I really appreciate people being creative with their assets and thinking of us when reviewing their stocks and qualified charitable distributions.” The goal of $50,000 was reached and surpassed.
