The Wahkiakum County Eagle - Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

The birds are chirping, lawn mowers are putt-putt-putting, weed eaters are whining and the rototillers are chugging. It’s fever time to get yards and gardens shaped up.

Wahkiakum Community Garden is prepping for the new season of growing. Volunteers have been busy on the sunny spring days cleaning and weeding and cleaning up, all in preparation for a new season of planting.

A nice thing about a new season--it’s a new start with high hopes of a bigger and better garden. The community garden purpose is to provide spaces for those who wish to grow their own food. In addition the garden managers have some raised beds for growing fresh, local and organic produce for local food banks.

Most of the plots have been spoken for, only five remain unclaimed. Anyone who is interested in using a plot to grow their own produce should contact Joyce Orr at 360-560-3496.

The coordinators, Master Gardeners, are on site on Wednesday mornings, and available to give some assistance and advice if needed.

Changes have been occurring: A new and bigger hoop-house (greenhouse) is under construction. It will be a great asset to the garden operation.

Plans are underway for our annual fund raiser: The Plant Sale, which will be held every Wednesday in May, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the garden. Wahkiakum County residents have been supportive in both providing plants for sale and for purchasing plants for their own gardens.

We have found that community gardening can be a fun and friendly way to get nutritious vegetables and even flowers and new friends.
