Pie Social set for May 7

April 22, 2021

The Cathlamet Woman's Club will host its annual pie social on Friday, May 7, from 1-4 p.m., at the Tsuga Gallery, 70 Main Street in Cathlamet. This long-standing event will have a few changes, but will honor the spirit of the past.

When the Chamber of Commerce was called the Commercial Club, they decided to have a Cherry Pie Social on George Washington's birthday as a thank you to the community. The tradition went on for over 20 years before fading. In 2002 the Cathlamet Woman's Club decided to revive the activity as a fundraiser for a local family. Charlene Jeffers was in charge of the event from that time through 2020. Eventually the pie social shifted to Valentine's day, and added different varieties and cupcakes, but for 18 years the Woman's Club provided slices of pie and coffee for donations that they would in turn use to help the community. Conservative estimates are that they have served over 7200 pieces of pie.

The pandemic made the club delay the 2021 fundraising event to Mother's day this year. New chairman, Maureen Zacher-Bockius says that, while we may not yet be able to socialize, we can still take home slices or whole pies and cupcakes to celebrate Mom. The club isn't serving drinks, but Patty Cakes is offering a 15 percent discount on coffee for all participants. The Woman's Club will also have information and sign ups available for any interested in joining.
