Mules roll over Kalama, Winlock
May 20, 2021
The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team won two more games this week, and senior Jake Leitz continued his double-double streak.
Last Thursday, the team beat Kalama at home 60-59.
"Kalama was a good win, but I don't think either team played all that clean," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "It's still early in the season. They did some good things down the stretch. I think we executed in the middle part of that fourth quarter. We could have made things a little easier in the last few minutes of the game. We definitely feel very lucky to come away with a win against a solid team.
"That was a big win for us," he added. "We did some good things but hopefully we learned from it as well."
Leitz scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds and five assists. Brodie Avalon added 15 points. Brody Carlson had 12. Logan LaBerge had eight points and nine rebounds. Ashden Niemeyer added one point.

Mules 12 16 10 22 --60
On Monday, the Mules beat Winlock 80-34 in front of a home crowd.
"Winlock was a fun game for the guys," Coach Souvenir said. "We started out slow. Offensively, we are struggling to play consistently. We blew that game out in a four minute period, where we moved the ball well, and trusted each other, and played as a team."
Avalon scored 26 points and had eight rebounds, four assists and six steals. Leitz had 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Jacob Johnson had 13 points and five steals. LaBerge had nine points and four assists. Royce Rodriguez scored five points. Titan Niemela had four points, and Zakk Carlson finished with one point. Niemeyer had eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Winlock 9 12 10 3 --34
Mules 20 22 20 18 --80
"We are showing spurts and flashes of what we could be," Coach Souvenir said. "We are making gains and improvements in each game."
The Mules entertain Rainier Mountaineers tomorrow (Friday) and Onalaska next Wednesday.
