Age-Adjusted Rates of COVID-19-Associated Hospitalizations by Vaccine Status

Following are US Center for Disease Control and Prevention summaries of study results comparing the correlation between vaccination and non-vaccination for covid-19 patients in hospitalizations and risk of death.

Summary: Rate of hospitalization

For all adults aged 18 years and older, the cumulative COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate was about 8 times higher in unvaccinated persons.

Although weekly rates can vary, the cumulative rate of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in unvaccinated adolescents ages 12-17 years was about 12 times higher than fully vaccinated adolescents aged 12-17 years.

Although weekly rates can vary, the cumulative rate of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in unvaccinated adults ages 18-49 years was about 13 times higher than fully vaccinated adults aged 18-49 years.

Although weekly rates can vary widely, the cumulative rate of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in unvaccinated adults ages 50-64 years was about 11 times higher than fully vaccinated adults aged 50-64 years.

Although weekly rates can vary widely, the cumulative rate of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in unvaccinated adults ages 65 years and older was about 6 times higher than fully vaccinated adults ages 65 years and older.

Summary: Risk of death

People who were unvaccinated had a greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 and a greater risk of dying from COVID-19 than people who were fully vaccinated (see below for the most recent rates).

Unvaccinated people in all age groups had higher case rates than fully vaccinated people in the same age groups.

Vaccinated people age 12-17 years had the lowest case rates compared with those in older age groups.

Unvaccinated people in all age groups had higher death rates than fully vaccinated people in the same age groups.

Unvaccinated people ages 50 years and older had higher death rates than those in younger age groups, with the highest rates among unvaccinated people ages 80 years and older.

Fully vaccinated people ages 80 years and older had higher death rates than vaccinated people in younger age groups.

Death rates among people aged 12-17 years are not shown on the graph due to low numbers of deaths from COVID-19 in this age group.

Case and death rates for people fully vaccinated with any of the three vaccine products (Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson's Janssen) were much lower than for unvaccinated people.
