Lady Mules top Comets to claim KM trophy

December 2, 2021

With only eight players on the Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team it took all of them, in one way or another, to bring the KM Trophy home, when they beat the Naselle Comets 57-34 on Tuesday night.

“Every night is an opportunity to learn and grow, more so than ever this season,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “I thought the girls worked really hard together and it was a nice step.”

Miya Kerstetter led the team with 15 points. She also had six assists and three steals. Courtney Carlson added 13 points and four steals. Megan Leitz had 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals. Emerald Niemela had 10 points and 16 rebounds. Reigha Niemeyer scored five points, and Amirah Abdul-Kariem finished the game with three points. Genevieve Fleming and Jessie LaFever also played.

"I thought the girls played great tonight as a team," Garrett added. "It's awesome to see four girls in double digits, and 22 assists as a team is off the charts. They all moved the ball around really well. Miya [Kerstetter], Courtney [Carlson], and Meg [Leitz] all shot the ball well tonight, but Emmie [Niemela] definitely stood out. She played physical on defense and was rebounding with strength tonight. This has been the only piece of her game that has been missing so it was a huge step in the right direction. Reigha [Niemeyer] played solid defense and Amirah [Abdul-Kariem] is already a spark plug on the defensive end and is improving offensively by the day. It was good to see all the girls get out there and enjoy the game tonight.

"In just a short few weeks this season has already been a blast and I can't wait to see how much this group can continue to grow."
