Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

January 3 — 1:51 a.m. A caller reported several large boulders in both lanes of SR 4 a mile west of County Line Park. State patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation were notified. 6:24 a.m. A vehicle got caught in a mudslide that blocked both lanes of SR 4 about a mile west of County Line Park. A deputy, the District 4 Fire Department, and WSDOT responded. State patrol was notified. One lane was opened for emergency use only at 11:39 a.m., but eventually both lanes were opened. 8:08 a.m. A caller, concerned about driver behavior, asked for a deputy’s presence on Beaver Creek Road while SR 4 remained closed for the mudslide. 9:16 a.m. High water was reported on several county roads, including Eden Valley Road, Altoona/Pillar Rock Road, Brooks Slough Road, and Barr Road. 9:23 a.m. A caller reported that a man was at the eastern base of KM waving an emergency blanket in the air, screaming about having trouble sleeping for the past few days. 9:30 a.m. A power outage was reported at a residence on Beaver Creek Road. The PUD was notified. 11:25 a.m. A vehicle got stuck in the snow on Beaver Creek Road. 1:06 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a Skamokawa resident. 2:24 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident. 5:29 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to a Middle Valley Road residence to aid someone who was choking. 6:12 p.m. A Grays River resident asked for assistance after a visitor had too much to drink and wouldn’t leave following an argument. A deputy responded and spoke with all parties involved. They denied that there had been an assault and did not want anyone trespassed. Two admitted that they “took down” the subject after he said he wanted to fight, but then stayed away until another person was able to get the subject into her vehicle. The subject said he was uninjured. All parties appeared to be intoxicated, but they said no threats were made and no one was fearful. No further law enforcement action was taken at that time. 7:32 p.m. Two power outages were reported on Puget Island. The PUD was notified. 9:56 p.m. A man was interrupted while trying to steal gas from a vehicle at a Grays River property. State patrol spoke to a man in Naselle who was walking to the gas station. He said he thought about stealing gas but decided to buy it instead. No further action was taken because of lack of evidence or damage to the vehicle.

January 4 — 1:44 p.m. A caller reported that a man was behaving strangely outside a Rosedale business. A deputy spoke with the man; he had been dancing and singing while waiting for the bus. 7:55 p.m. A welfare check was requested at a Rosedale address after a child complained that family members were being mean. A deputy responded and spoke to the adults involved.

January 5 — 9:49 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a resident on Greenwood Road who was having an issue related to diabetes. 12 p.m. A caller said that hunters stopped in the middle of a Puget Island road and started shooting at geese. A deputy responded and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was notified. 12:43 p.m. A caller from a Rosedale business reported that a juvenile had been shoplifting. 1:44 p.m. A caller reported that someone in Rosburg was illegally in possession of firearms. 5:26 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid someone who may have had a miscarriage. 8:08 p.m. A caller reported that two people had gotten out of their vehicle on SR 4 about a mile west of County Line Park and were attempting to move a large rock in the westbound lane. State patrol and WSDOT were informed. A caller said it looked like the hillside was starting to move again.

January 6 — 5 p.m. A vehicle became disabled after it struck rocks at the site of the recent mudslide on SR 4, about a mile west of County Line Park. A deputy and state patrol responded. At 6:24 a.m., a caller reported rocks in the same location. WSDOT was notified. 6:43 a.m. High water was reported on several county roads, including Deep River Road, Anderson Road, Elochoman Valley Road, Loop Road, and SR 4 in the Abe Creek Hill area. Several roads were closed because of high water, including North and South Satterlund Road, a portion of Loop Road and Barr Road, a portion of Eden Valley Road, a portion of Covered Bridge Road, Risk Road, and Nelson Creek Road. Schraum Road was reported to be washed out, and the west end of Hungry Highway was closed because of a mudslide. 10:30 a.m. An individual was arrested after an assault was reported at a Rosedale home. 11:51 a.m. More high water and road closures were reported. High water was reported on Mullan Road, one lane was closed on Beaver Creek Road. Foster Road, Peterson Road, East Valley Road, and Barr Road were closed. West Valley Road was closed at West Valley Butte. A tree came down on SR 4, blocking eastbound traffic on KM, and a second tree later came down on the east side of KM, blocking the westbound lane. There was a mudslide on East Valley Road, a small landslide on Deep River Road, and a caller said there was a large crack and hole near a logging road access gate along Risk Road. Slide activity was reported on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road, which was later closed. A tree fell and was blocking both lanes of Oneida Road. Callers reported well over a foot of water on SR 4 west of Skamokawa. Another caller reported a “large body of water” over SR 4 at Nassa Point. High water was reported on SR 4 at Seal River, and near Raistakka Road, and the road was closed at 5:33 a.m. SR 4 was reported to be peeling up in the Grays River area, and a caller said there were eight to 10 inches of water over the roadway. A slide went into a culvert along SR 4 on the west side of KM, causing the culvert to overflow, and public works was notified when logs clogged a waterway under a bridge on Foster Road. 12:10 p.m. A caller reported that a water pump had been left at a Puget Island address by the Puget Island Fire Department. 3:53 p.m. A resident on Elochoman Valley Road called, concerned that her house would flood after she was told some material was put in a nearby culvert by the county road department. 3:57 p.m. A caller offered the use of a spare hospital bed and an electric oxygen concentrator if any elderly Skamokawa residents needed assistance. 9:31 p.m. A caller reported a garage fire at an Elochoman Valley residence. The District 4 Fire Department, the PUD, and Skamokawa emergency personnel responded. The fire was extinguished at 10:58 p.m. 10:13 p.m. A power outage was reported at two locations in Skamokawa. The Skamokawa Fire Department and the PUD responded and power was restored at 11:09 p.m. 10:29 p.m. A caller said there was a problem with a drain on Fairgrounds Road.

January 7 — 2:01 a.m. A caller reported that someone was honking a horn in the Skamokawa area. She was concerned that someone might be hurt. A deputy responded and spoke with the individual in the vehicle, who said he was camping at the property and had an agreement with the owner to fix up the place. 5:40 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Rosedale resident who was having trouble with his bowels. 6:25 a.m. A Skamokawa resident reported a power outage. A deputy attempted to contact someone from the PUD. 8:37 a.m. A deputy spoke with a Cathlamet resident after receiving a referral from Adult Protective Services. 1:01 p.m. A caller said that a propane tank had fallen and was floating in the water in the Grays River area. It needed to be shut off. The Grays River Fire Department responded. 1:56 p.m. A welfare check was requested for an individual believed to be staying at a Grays River home. A deputy responded and learned that the person had not been there for several weeks. 6:35 p.m. A caller reported that a woman was loitering and bothering customers outside a business on Main Street in Cathlamet. A deputy responded and spoke to the woman. She left the area. 7:53 p.m. A deputy and the Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual at a home on East Valley Road who was possibly having a heart attack or a stroke.

January 8 — 11:27 a.m. A caller reported that there was a water leak between the meter and a house in Cathlamet. He needed the water shut off. 12:35 p.m. A caller in Deep River reported that people in two trucks were shooting near his home. He said he would chase the subjects down. He called back to say the subjects had left, but they had shot two ducks which were considered pets. He was advised not to approach the people involved. State patrol and WDFW were notified. The caller went to a restaurant in Naselle to look for the trucks. Authorities in Pacific County were notified. 1:38 p.m. A caller asked to have someone trespassed from Indian Village. She was advised that the person could be trespassed from common areas, but not from the park as a whole. 2:57 p.m. A Grays River resident reported that a neighbor’s dog was on her property and trying to kill her chickens. She said it was an ongoing problem. A deputy spoke with the dog owner about the dangerous dog ordinance.

January 9 — 8:35 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an Elochoman Valley resident who was having an allergic reaction. 10:14 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported a vehicle fire. A deputy, the Cathlamet Fire Department, and the Puget Island Fire Department responded. 11:28 a.m. A rollover accident was reported on Salmon Creek road. A deputy, the Grays River Fire Department, and the Grays River ambulance responded. A tow was called. 11:31 a.m. A vehicle lost a tire in the middle of SR 4 just east of Cathlamet. The two occupants of the car were fighting in the road, and the woman claimed she had been raped. She appeared to be injured. The man left the scene on foot, carrying a suitcase. A deputy, state patrol, the Cathlamet ambulance, and a domestic violence advocate responded. The woman’s mother was also en route. An individual was taken into custody. 11:48 a.m. A caller reported ice on Salmon Creek Road. 2:16 p.m. A caller reported suspicious activity in a vehicle parked at a Rosedale business. 3:10 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident asked if he could dispose of an elk that died of hoof rot in his yard. WDFW was notified and he was given the okay.
