The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team won’t get much rest this week, with four games in four days, and the district tournament set to begin on Saturday. They split the first two games of the week, bringing the overall record to 13-5, and 7-1 in league.

On Monday, the Lady Mules lost their first league game 49-39 to the Pirates in Adna.

“Last night was a good example of what happens when you are casual and undisciplined,” Coach Rob Garrett said. “Our girls simply didn’t show up ready to play, and Adna took full advantage of it. We forgot to do all the little things that make us a great team. We needed it, honestly. Sometimes it can be a good thing to be brought back to reality and that’s exactly what it was for us.”

Emerald Niemela had 12 points and nine rebounds. Miya Kerstetter scored 12 points. Reigha Niemeyer added seven points and four assists. Bailey McKinley had six points and Courtney Carlson finished the game with two points.

The team was able to turn things around on Tuesday with a 49-25 win in Toledo.

“Tonight the girls learned from their mistakes the night before,” Coach Garrett said. “We worked as a team to get each other good looks. It was really nice having the squad back at full strength. Our talk, intensity, and movement were all a huge step up tonight. Great team win that should set us up nicely to take home the league title.”

Kerstetter scored 12 points. Niemela added nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Carlson had eight points, six rebounds, and four assists. Niemeyer had seven points and seven assists. McKinley had seven points and eight rebounds. Megan Leitz had four points and six assists. Jessie LaFever had two points.

The score for their home game on Wednesday against Morton/White Pass was not available at press time. Their last regular season game is today (Thursday) at home against Stevenson.
