Port 2 addresses building, new manager

Commissioners of Port District 2 covered a variety of business when they met Tuesday in Skamokawa.

Commissioners quickly adopted resolutions formally appointing Terina Davis as interim manager. Former Manager Jeff Smith resigned the day after the commission's January meeting, and Davis, then assistant manager, has handled managerial duties since then.

The commission began advertising for candidates to fill the manager's job in February and has received only two resumés. Commissioner Allen Bennett recommended the advertising be expanded to online firms. Commissioners Brian O'Connor and Austin Burkhalter agreed, and they voted to extend the application deadline to April 15.

Davis and the commissioners discussed improvements they want to make to their new facility, the former Skamokawa United Methodist Church building.

The commission has sought quotes for roof repair. Upgrades are underway to the electrical system, and Davis added that plumbing and the heating systems also need work.

The two estimates for roofing work came in around $75,000, Davis said.

The commission agreed to call for bids, with bidders providing detailed specification for their bids.

"I think the roof is one storm away from real problems," O'Connor commented. "The bell tower is leaning more and more."

In addition, Davis said, the port district office needs painting and repair of some dry rot around a window. Commissioners voted to accept a proposal from contractor Roger Tover for the work.
