Cheese maker offered educational opportunity

After Little Island Creamery took first place for their brie at the American Cheese Society Judging and Competition for 2022, they got a visit from two women from France, who were so delighted with the cheese and the head cheesemaker, Lorraine Dietz, they offered her an opportunity to attend a prestigious cheese making school in France for a course in soft cheeses.

“They’ve held a spot for me,” Dietz said.

The intense course costs $6,300 and is scheduled for two weeks in January and is offered through Ecoles Nationales d’Industrie Laitière (National Dairy Industry Schools).

A visitor from Seattle who was in the community briefly to visit a friend had tasted the award winning brie and after speaking to Dietz, encouraged her to attend, and set up a gofundme account to raise $10,000 to cover the cost of the class, airfare, and insurance.
