Lady Mules come up short in district volleyball

The Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team’s season ended last week, but not without a fight.

After losing 3-1 to Toutle Lake in the first round of the double elimination district tournament on October 29, the Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team had to win their next three games to have any chance of advancing to state.

They won the first two games, beating Morton/White Pass 3-1 that same day, and Rainier 3-0 on November 2.

It was later on that second day of district competition that Wahkiakum lost to Forks 3-0 in a loser out game and ended their season.

It is the last season for seniors McKenna Mendez, Reigha Niemeyer, Selena Salas, Breyonna Montgomery, Miya Kerstetter, and Ava Thomas.

“This year was definitely a different one for us and we faced a lot of adversity over the course of the season,” Coach Kayli Hurley said. “With that being said, that kind of a season is a huge opportunity to show growth as athletes and as young women. I am proud of how far the girls came this year in their ability to put together a whole match.

"Our most put together game of the season was against Rainier on our last day, before we lost out to Forks, and I'm glad that they were able to do that to prove to themselves that they are capable. Although our season ended much earlier than we would have liked, there were many lessons learned and a lot of growth in these girls this year. I am proud of them.”
