January 19, 2023



Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

January 9 — 12:42 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported several people trespassing on his property. He said they were walking around the property, fishing, and building a fire. A deputy responded and spoke to the subjects. They said they did not know the land was private property and said they would not return. 6:22 p.m. A caller said a registered sex offender may be living with children in Cowlitz County. A deputy advised the caller to notify Cowlitz County. The deputy contacted authorities in Cowlitz County and requested a welfare check on the children. 11:10 p.m. The Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Department was asked to be on the lookout for a subject with probable cause for robbery and assault who had left Cowlitz County in a black Acura after stealing another vehicle.

January 10 — 8:09 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that two individuals who previously peddled drugs on his property were now leaving threatening messages on his voicemail. He believed the two were responsible for setting fire to his truck a couple months earlier. A deputy contacted the caller and concluded that there were no credible threats at this time. The caller said he would contact the sheriff’s department if the men returned. 8:39 a.m. A dog was found in the Elochoman Valley. The Wahkiakum Animal Advocates Group was notified. 10:34 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a resident on Greenwood Road who fell after slipping on some ice. 11:41 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident complained that a neighbor was not taking care of his dogs. He said they were constantly barking, howling, and getting loose. He also believed that they were being abused. A deputy attempted to contact the caller multiple times but received no answer. 12:38 p.m. A Rosedale resident said her daughter assaulted her and took her phone in an effort to blackmail her. 3:49 p.m. A van and trailer were reported to be blocking a Cathlamet street. 4:31 p.m. A Deep River resident said a neighbor’s dog attacked her and her cat. 4:53 p.m. A caller said a dog on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road attacked him while he was riding his bicycle. 6:21 p.m. A caller accidentally dialed 911. 10:52 p.m. A caller on Middle Valley Road said that neighbors were riding loud vehicles and driving motorcycles too fast.

January 11 — 9:45 a.m. A welfare check was requested for two youths who had not attended school for several days. There were concerns about their living conditions. A deputy responded and met with the whole family. He determined that basic needs were being met and spoke to parents about traffic around the home during all hours of the night. 10:49 a.m. Three bags of garbage were reported in the eastbound lane of SR 4 near Nassa Point. 1:27 p.m. A caller who complained about a dog chasing him on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road while riding his bicycle was advised of preventative measures by a deputy.

January 12 — 12:24 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an east county child who was having a seizure. 2:57 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident who may have overdosed. 10:22 a.m. A caller saw a young child, not dressed for the weather, running alone along SR 4 near Brooks Slough. The child was picked up by someone in a white dump truck who then headed toward Skamokawa. When contacted, the county road department said it was not their vehicle. 12:43 p.m. Deputies were asked to be on the lookout for a possibly armed and suicidal individual from Pacific County traveling in a silver Chevy Silverado. 1:20 p.m. A panic alarm was activated at a Cathlamet address. 3 p.m. High water was reported on Wainamo Road. Warning signs were posted. 6:28 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious couple sitting in a vehicle parked in a storage unit bay in Rosedale. The couple were heard talking in a nearby store about wiping off their plates so they wouldn’t get stopped by law enforcement. A deputy responded but was unable to locate the people.

January 13 — 12:20 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident complaining of shortness of breath and an irregular heart beat. 1:20 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident complaining of back pain. A deputy provided assistance when emergency personnel found the door locked and the resident was unable to get to the door. 4:48 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance and a deputy aided an East Valley resident who was having trouble breathing. 5:45 p.m. A welfare check was requested for an individual living in an East Valley home. 5:48 p.m. A caller said she was receiving harassing texts. 7:57 p.m. A Cathlamet resident was transported to hospice. 9:42 p.m. Deputies and state patrol responded to a domestic disturbance at an Elochoman Valley home when a caller said a woman asked for help. The subject and victim were later found in a vehicle at a Rosedale gas station and the man was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant and for violating a restraining order. 9:52 p.m. A caller accidentally dialed 911. 11:23 p.m. A caller said a car was stopped in the middle of SR 4 in the Deep River area. A deputy responded and said the car was moved to the right hand shoulder and a tow was en route.

January 14 — 7:51 a.m. The manager of a Rosedale business said a vehicle had been in the parking lot for four days and asked what steps needed to be taken for it to be towed. 11 a.m. A caller said a large branch was hanging on power lines along SR 4 near Little Cape Horn. The PUD was notified. 12:47 p.m. A Puget Island resident asked to have a former tenant trespassed after the individual returned to the home and screamed at the caller. 5:42 p.m. A caller said a dog on North Welcome Slough had been barking all day. 6:10 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident needed assistance after a fall. 6:20 p.m. The Cathlamet Fire Department and a deputy responded when a caller reported a lot of smoke at the trailer park in Rosedale. 10:01 p.m. A caller said a car was partially blocking the westbound lane of SR 4 near Flandersville.

January 15 — 4:58 a.m. The District 4 Fire Department responded to an Elochoman Valley home when a caller said the porch was on fire. The caller was able to extinguish the fire but said it was still smoldering. When it appeared the the fire may have been set intentionally, the sheriff’s department was contacted. The scene was photographed and a deputy attempted to contact someone at the residence. 8:05 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported that three people seeking access to the river were trespassing on his property and belligerent. 8:05 a.m. A caller said a boathouse on Welcome Slough was drifting after breaking loose. The owner was contacted. He was already aware and said that the boathouse was secured to a piling but the anchors had broken loose. 8:42 a.m. A Rosedale resident said a family member was unwilling to return her vehicle after she loaned it to him several weeks earlier. She said she was receiving threats. A deputy spoke with all parties involved. They agreed to meet at the sheriff’s office, where the property was exchanged. 12 p.m. An East Valley resident complained that neighbors were shooting guns. 12:38 p.m. A Rosedale resident reported that a child had been bitten by a family member’s dog. She said the bite was unprovoked and requested that the owner be given a warning. 4 p.m. A caller needed assistance after getting locked out of a vehicle. 9:49 p.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Rosburg resident who was having trouble breathing. 10:34 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious woman outside a van parked in front of the courthouse.
