Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

We've been down this road before

To The Eagle:

Last week’s letters “Stop the blame game” and “Place credit where it’s due,” were supported by facts gleaned from the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Bloomberg, Neil Cavuto on Fox, the bipartisan immigration bill passed by the Democratic Senate (which House Republicans refused to debate), the Deptartment of Energy, Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals, and Biden’s White House proclamations.

Ludicrously, a contributor last week, declared those sources to be “in her opinion, disinforma- tion because they were written by Democrats and liberals.” That reader is either ill-informed or disingenuous. I’m going to go with the ‘ignorance is bliss’ scenario.

Little wonder she feels “on her own, searching for the truth.” Her’s must be a painful search. Nonetheless, she’s asked an intelligent $100 billion question: “ why has this regime stopped funding our $15 billion southern border wall, but has sent over $100 billion of our money to Ukraine to protect theirs. Does that make sense?”

It very much does. The U.S. commitment to Ukraine’s battle for freedom and survival amounts to .33% ( less than 1%) of our GDP. Norway, which shares a 121 mile border with the Russian behemoth now trying to grind Ukraine into bloody paste, has committed $7 billion, almost 2% of its own GDP toward Ukraine’s defense.

Why? Because the Scandinavian countries and the European Union’s NATO allies are not trying to avert the outbreak of World War III. They consider it to have already begun when Russian dictator Putin invaded and “annexed” Crimea in 2014.

Putin has already threatened nuclear escalation to deter the West. What if it works? Who then will Putin invade with the same threat? Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway?

We are living with the same choices and circumstances that saw Hitler’s rise to power and his conquest of Europe 78 years ago. Appeasing Putin will lead down the same road as when the Western democracies tried to appease Hitler. We absolutely must stand and fight alongside Europe, and Ukraine.
