Have the Mules turned their season around?

The football team is winning

The Wahkiakum Mules turned around early season losses to move into first place in the Central 2B Lower East/West league on Friday with a 21-12 win against Rainier.

"Defense really played well tonight," Coach Ryan Lorenzo said. "I think they are starting to understand the defensive scheme we are running this year. Offense played really well. We had two turnovers in the red zone that we have to fix. For the most part, the athletes did their jobs and that's all we can ask for. Zakk Carlson had some really nice punts including one downed by Cooper Carlson on the 1 yard line and Grant Wilson had a really nice catch and run while breaking three tackles for a 89 yard touchdown."

Z. Carlson threw eight for 16 from the quarterback position for 161 yards, and connected with Jacob Johnson, Grant Wilson, and C. Carlson for three touchdowns. He also led rushing with 69 yards on 15 carries.

On defense, Wilson had four solo tackles and Jayden Stoddard assisted with 13.

"Our area is split up between three leagues," Lorenzo said, to explain the coming postseason.

"North, south, and ours. We joined this league knowing that it would give us the opportunity to play some eight man games, [which would] be more competitive for us."

Only the top two teams from this league get a chance at crossovers, or postseason play, Lorenzo explained. Next Tuesday, October 31, the first ranked team in our league will play the number four Central 2B South team while the second ranked team in the Lower East/West league plays the fourth place North team.

"If we win that game then we would take that spot in crossovers, beginning on November 4," Lorenzo said.

The Mules face Ocosta at home on Thursday (today), instead of their usual Friday night game.It is also Senior Night and the final game of the regular season.
