Mules will compete at state tournament Saturday

The basketball team has advanced to state competition after wins over Toledo, Ilwaco

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team are 13-4 in the 2B Central district and 18-6 overall after their win over Toledo Saturday (68-56). They lost to Toutle Lake Friday (58-53).

The boys beat Ilwaco in overtime last Wednesday, Feb. 14, 67-63.

In that game, the Fishermen took an early lead, but the Mules fought to catch up after half time, and with 1.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Kyler Sause hit a thrilling three point shot on an inbound pass to tie the game at 60-60. The Mules would go on to outscore Ilwaco in overtime.

Zakk Carlson led the Mules with 29 points and six rebounds. Kyler Sause added 17 points and five assists. Jacob Johnson scored 14 points and had eight assists. Parker Leitz had three points. Nathan Garrett had two points and eight rebounds. Grant Wilson had three points.

On Saturday, the team will travel to Chehalis for the opening round of the WIAA State Tournament. They will battle Liberty High School of Spangle for a slot in the upcoming round of 12, which will take place Feb. 28.
