Much like the school’s softball team, Clatskanie has another group of athletes riding an eight-game win streak. Sweeping a double header last Friday against Nestucca and defeating Vernonia 11-0 Tuesday, the Tigers haven’t lost a game since April 9 against Kennedy. The offense against Nestucca resumed where it had left off on Tuesday, April 22, as the Tigers put up 10 runs in the first game of the twin bill Friday. Clatskanie was led at the plate by senior Victor Frank, who had four RBI, while scoring two runs and collecting two hits. Junior Cash Doney led the team in runs scored with three and stolen bases with two. Freshman Will Van Voorst and junior Luke Andreasen two hits, two runs scored, and three RBI. Andreasen and junior Bode Shulda led the team from the mound, striking out six while allowing only one earned run.
Clatskanie would have a little bit tougher time in the second game of the double header, as the Tigers had to overcome deficits of 4-0 and 7-2 in order to pull off the 9-7 win. Scoring four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh, the Tigers held off the Bobcats in the bottom of the seventh for the win. Clatskanie was led by junior Finn McDonnell and Andreasen, who had two RBI each and a combined three hits and four runs scored. Senior Carter White, junior Zach Mollenhour, Doney, and Van Voorst each had an RBI in the close win. Mollenhour, Shulda, and McDonnell combined for six strikeouts and five earned runs from the mound.
Clatskanie’s win streak reached eight Tuesday following an 11-0 mercy-rule victory over Vernonia. Scoring five runs in the second and three runs in both the third and fourth innings, the Tigers rode Mollenhour and Andreasen’s 12 strikeouts over five innings to complete the shutout. Clatskanie was led by senior Ben Blackwood, who knocked in three runs over two hits. Shulda and Mollenhour scored three runs each and Van Voorst scored two runs. Andreasen, like Mollenhour, contributed to his pitching effort from the plate, knocking in two runs on one hit.
The Tigers (11-3) return to action Friday, May 2 against Vernonia and will take on Knappa Tuesday, May 6. Like the school’s softball team, Clatskanie (7-0) is undefeated in league play.
