Wahkiakum softball has up and down week

The Wahkiakum High School girls softball team got off to a decent start last tuesday, April 22 against Naselle, but the home-team Comets were able to thwart every offensive showing their Mule opponent had to offer. Scoring once in the second inning and three more in the third, Naselle tied the score at 4-4 entering the fourth inning. After the Mules scored in the top of the fourth, the Comets scored with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth. When the Mules scored two in the top of the sixth, the Comets put up three to take the lead 8-7 going into the final inning. After a two-run spot in the top of the seventh to take a 9-8 lead, Wahkiakum gave up two more runs in the bottom of the inning, including a walk-off home run by Naselle’s Emma Kragerud to secure the victory for Naselle. The Mules were led at the plate by Amy Horman, who scored three runs, collected two hits, and had two RBI in the loss. Ryen Hurley took the loss for the Mules, striking out six while allowing only two earned runs over six innings pitched. Following the game Coach Kami Gray said, “Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing 13 walks for the game.”

The Mules would regroup Friday, April 25, by putting up 30 runs over the first two innings against visiting Oakville. The Mules were led by Zoe Doiron and Addy Ogle, who had four RBI and scored three runs each. Horman and Hurley led the team in runs scored with four apiece, and Hurley led the team from the mound, allowing no earned runs and only one hit.

Traveling to Ocosta Monday, the Mules gave up eight runs over the first two innings and another six over the third and fourth to fall 14-2 in five innings via the mercy-run rule. Horman and Hurley scored the only two runs of the game, and not a single hit was registered for the Mules. Hurley and Ogle combined for three strikeouts from the mound and allowed a combined six earned runs in the loss.
