Wahkiakum track supplies first-place finishes

During last Thursday’s meet at South Bend, the Wahkiakum track and field team saw plenty of top-five finishes from both its boys and girls. For the boys, Noah Sandhu took first in both the Men’s 800M and 1600M with personal-record times of 2:19.70 and 5:09.33. Josiah Garrett took third in the Men’s 3200M with a time of 14:28.69,, while Jayden Stoddard took third in the Men’s 100M with a time of 11.78. Cody Vicars had a fifth-place finish in the Men’s 3200M with a time of 5:49.31. In team competition for the boys, the quartet of Robby Chandler, Dom Diaz, Joseph Merz, and Jayden Stoddard took fourth in the Men’s 4X100M Relay with a time of 49.31. The team is 20th overall in 1B state rankings but first in District 4. In the field, Chandler took first in the Men’s Javelin with a distance of 146 feet, 5 inches, putting him eighth in State 1B and third in District 4. Rounding out the boys, Kyle Gonzales took fifth in the Men’s Discus with a distance of 100 feet, 11 inches, and Cor Hoogendoorn had personal records in the Men’s Discus with a distance of 65 feet, 3 inches and the Men’s Shot Put with a distance of 33 feet, 11 inches. Chandler also saw a personal record in the Men’s Shot Put with a distance of 33 feet, 11 inches.

For the girls, Mayleonna Casey had a first-place finish in the Women’s 800M with a personal-record time of 2:42.32, good enough for 20th in State 1B and first in District 4. Sam Dela Cruz took first in the Women’s 300M hurdles with a time of 55.21, good enough for 17th in State 1B and third in District 4. Clara Hogue had a personal record time of 14.41 in the Women’s 100M. In team competition, the quartet of Anna Vik, Casey, Hogue, and Dela Cruz took third in the Women’s 4X100M Relay with a time of 56.24, good enough for 14th in State 1B and second in District 4. In the field for the girls, Dela Cruz took second in the Women’s Triple Jump with a distance of 30 feet, 8 inches. Dela Cruz is currently ranked 10th in State 1B and second in District 4.

The team traveled to Ilwaco Tuesday, May 6, for the Pacific County Invite and had another slew on personal records and top-five finishes. Sandhu took first in both the Men’s 800M and 1600M with times of 2:26.05 and 5:18.04. Vicars took third in the 800M with a personal-record time of 2:34.69 and fifth in the 1600M with a personal-record time of 5:37.43. Stoddard took second in the Men’s 100M with a time of 12.03, while Chace Andree Roden had a personal-record time of 30.12 in the Men’s 200M and Garrett had a personal-record of 6:01.22 in the Men’s 1600M. In team competition for the boys, the quartet of Merz, Diaz, Chandler, and Stoddard took second in the Men’s 4X100M Relay with a time of 49.47 while the quartet of Ethan Hurley, Chandler Tawater, Merz, and Gonzales took first in the Men’s 4X100M Throwers Relay with a time of 54.21. Rounding out track for the boys, the team of Sandhu, Garrett, Vicars, and Diaz took third in the Men’s 4X400M Relay with a time of 4:23.53. In the field for the boys, Garrett had a personal record in the Men’s Long Jump with a distance of 15 feet, 1 inch; and Andree-Roden had a personal-record distance of 14 feet, 11 inches. Gonzales, Hoogendoorn, and Andree-Roden had personal records in the Men’s Shot Put 12lb with distances of 34 feet, 5 inches; 34 feet, 4 inches; and 26 feet, 2 inches. Gonzales’ distance was good enough for fifth place in the event. Chandler’s distance of 140 feet, 11 inches was good enough for first in the Men’s Javelin 800g, while Jason Shervy’s distance of 92 feet, 2 inches in the same event was good enough for a personal record. Rounding out the boys was Andree-Roden, who had a personal-record distance of 78 feet, 3.5 inches in the Men’s Discus 1.6kg.

For the girls, Casey took first in the Women’s 800M with a personal-record time of 2:42.22 and second in the 1600M with a time of 6:03.96. Hogue took second in the Women’s 100M with a time of 14.56 and Dela Cruz took third in the Women’s 300M Hurdles with a time of 54.62. In team competition for the girls, the quartet of Vik, Casey, Hogue, and Dela Cruz took second in the Women’s 4X100M Relay with a time of 57.41. In the field for the girls, Vik took first in the Women’s Javelin 600g with a personal-record distance of 103 feet, 3 inches and fourth in the Discus 1kg with a distance of 77 feet, 8 inches. Dela Cruz took second in the Women’s Triple Jump with a school-record distance of 32 feet, 1 inch and took second in the Long Jump with a distance of 13 feet, 10 inches. Hogue took fourth in the same event with a distance of 12 feet, 8 inches to round out the day’s competition.

The team traveled to South Bend Wednesday for the 1B District 4 Meet, but the results were not available at the time of press. The 1B District 1/2/3/4 Championship will take place Thursday, May 22 Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
