Homelessness in Clatskanie on the rise

In Clatskanie, the homeless population is on the rise, affecting both adults and children. The increase is straining local sources within Oregon and Clatskanie's limited resources available for both adults and kids, as it becomes an escalating concern. Officials and a concerned group of individuals look to address the problem.

Clatskanie, with a population of 1,800, is experiencing a surge in homelessness, following the statewide trend. According to data from the Oregon Department of Education, nearly four percent of K-12 students in Oregon were homeless during the 2022-2023 school year, with popular locations such as McKenzie and Arlington having rates reported as high as 24 and 22 percent respectively.

Clatskanie School District has about 650 students, and the reported increase in the number of homeless students is not publicly available. Still, we interviewed Clatskanie High School Counselor Natalie Krick for some statistical input from the 2024-2025 school year. “Yes there are a lot of them,” Krick said. “Middle school and high school; houseless students, not homeless.”

Efforts to combat homelessness in Clatskanie include partnerships between local schools, nonprofits, and government agencies. Some aim to provide temporary housing, as well as educational support and job training, to help get them on their feet. However, a lack of affordable housing and funding kills these initiatives.

Oakridge School District Youth and Transition Coordinator Mark Osburn said, “We need more resources to make a real difference. Without stable housing, it's hard for students to succeed academically.”
