Clatskanie all-stars compete in La Grande

Some of Clatskanie Middle High School's top seniors from football and volleyball had the opportunity to represent the Tigers one last time, suiting up alongside other top competitors from around the state at the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association all-star games over the weekend.

The all-star games took place at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande on June 21, a nearly five-hour drive from Clatskanie, but well worth the journey. Three Tigers seniors showed their stripes, along with a coach stalking the sidelines.

Volleyball standout Natalie Baker represented Clatskanie on the court, a fitting end to an excellent tenure with the Tigers. Baker was a three-time First Team All-League player for Clatskanie, and it seemed only right that hard work garnered an all-star finish.

On the gridiron, Clatskanie Head Coach Sean Gorley held the reins for the nine-man West All-Star team and had one more chance to coach seniors Boomer Harris and Ryder Gorley. Harris plays on the offensive and defensive line for the Tigers, while Ryder Gorley primarily plays wide receiver and strong safety.

In an effort to get some touches in with their all-star teammates, the crew headed out a few days early for some practice. Coach Gorley expressed his excitement over the opportunity in a Facebook post on the Clatskanie Football page on June 18. "Great time at Eastern Oregon University in LaGrande prepping for the All Star game on Saturday," stated Coach Gorley in the post. "Great kids, good fun. It's an honor to get to coach Boomer and Ryder one last time."

It was the first nine-man all-star game of what will become an annual event. Unfortunately for the West All-Stars, they had some trouble getting in the endzone, as the team lost 46-0 to the East.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Ryder Gorley received Offensive Player of the Game for Team West, which was celebrated by the Clatskanie Middle High School Athletics Facebook page.

The game will hopefully be the first of many all-star fixtures featuring some of Clatskanie's top athletes. For the three seniors, the weekend marked the end of their careers as Tigers in all-star fashion.
