The Clatskanie Tigers varsity football team got its season off to a strong start with a 39-28 road victory against Regis. The Tigers fell into an early 7-0 hole in the first quarter before rallying with 26 straight points over four straight touchdowns. The first Tigers touchdown of the season came by way of a 37-yard run by sophomore quarterback Will Van Voorst. Another run by Van Voorst gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead going into halftime. Two passing touchdowns in the third quarter by Van Voorst brought the score to 26-7, before Regis countered with two straight touchdowns. Holding a 26-20 lead in the fourth quarter, the Tigers were aided by senior running back Lucas Andreasen's 19-yard touchdown run. Van Voorst put the Tigers up 39-20 with his third touchdown run of the game, good for 24 yards. A late 80-yard touchdown play and two-point conversion by Regis brought the final tally to 39-28.
Van Voorst connected on five of his nine passing attempts, ending with 69 yards, including his long 38-yard touchdown stripe. The Tigers were led on the ground by Andreasen, who rushed for 233 yards, including a long run of 40 yards. Senior Daylon Gutierrez led the team in receiving with 62 yards and two touchdowns. Van Voorst led the team in tackles with eight, followed by junior Zion Ausmus, who had five, and sophomore Landyn Winton, who had four. Winton also recovered a fumble and Gutierrez and senior Quinten Combs each had an interception for Clatskanie. The Tigers (1-0) return to Clatskanie for the team's home opener Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. against visiting Stanfield (0-1), which lost its season opener last Friday against Gaston.
