Clatskanie girls volleyball bounces back

Following a 3-0 start to its season, the Clatskanie girls volleyball team traveled to Sheridan last Thursday, Sept. 4, to take on the Delphian Dragons. Winning the first set 25-22, the Tigers then lost the second set 27-25, before bouncing back and winning the third set 32-30. Delphian staved off a victory by the visiting Tigers with a 25-23 win in set four, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Dragons completed the comeback with a 15-11 win in the fifth set to ultimately win the match. The girls then played Monroe the same day, defeating another team named the Dragons in three straight sets (25-23, 25-14, 25-18) to even their season record at 1-1.

After having the weekend off, Clatskanie traveled to Vernonia, where they defeated the Loggers in three straight sets (25-9, 25-19, 25-12). “Setter Addy Compton did a great job running the offense and picking up balls on defense,” said Head Coach Amanda Baker. A junior, Compton had 18 assists, three kills on four attempts, six digs, five aces, and a stuff block. Also contributing strongly for the girls were seniors Joey Sizemore and Mya Jensen and juniors Lacey Willis and Olivia George. Sizemore had eight kills and two stuff blocks, while Willis came in second on the team with six kills. Jensen and George had four kills each to round out the victory.

The Tigers (4-1) return home Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. to take on Nestucca and will stay home Tuesday, Sept. 16 to take on Faith Bible Christian at 6:30 p.m. inside the Clatskanie gymnasium. The girls will then travel to Gaston Thursday, Sept. 18 to take on the Greyhounds.
