The Naselle Comets girls volleyball team had a pair of wins last week, beginning with Wishkah and concluding on senior night against Valley. Last Tuesday, Oct. 7, the girls completed a three-set sweep (25-7, 25-11, 25-15) over Wishkah. According to Coach Rebekah Wirkkala, Jessie Smith “set the tone,” going 37-0 at the serving line. Smith led the team in assists with 15, aces with 20, and had the lone block for the team. Haylee Rose led the squad in kills with eight, and Maddie Dielman contributed four assists as well. “[It was a] fun night where all subs got in and [the] team cheered each other on,” said Wirkkala following the victory.
Two days later, the Comets recognized their seniors at home against Valley. Despite falling 22-25 in the first set, Naselle won the following three (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) to complete the senior-night victory. “We honored and celebrated our five seniors tonight,” said Wirkkala. “Emotions were high, with the gym packed from the beginning. Valley took the first game, and then we settled and took control…These girls are pretty fun to watch and a joy to coach.”
Smith led the team with 38 assists and four aces, while Sophia Colombo led with 18 digs and contributed three aces. Mylee Dunagan led the team with three blocks and added nine kills, and Rose led the team again in kills with 13. Rose also had 10 digs to complete the double double.
